A Cure For Winter Blues

Who’s ready for winter to be over? Not too many people are thinking about gardening when there’s a winter wonderland outside, but as long as the ground is not too frozen solid, this is a great time of year for planting deciduous trees. Everyone knows the bulbs and shrubs like daffodils and Forsythia that will bring some early spring cheer. There are also some great trees that can bring warm colors to your cold landscapes, here are just a few:
Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ is commonly known as a coral bark maple. The name says it all. A brilliant tree to use as a focal point for any garden. It will stay small, 15-20’ tall and wide.

Acer rubrum is our native red maple. Well known as a shade tree and for wonderful fall color, fewer people think of it for its early March buds and flowers.
Everyone should also be familiar with 2 other popular natives, the dogwood and redbud. They are also fabulous with vibrant white and lilac blooms.
Finally we’ll take you back to the Asian tree. The deciduous magnolias are superb for lighting up our landscapes at winter’s end with purple, pink, and white varieties to choose from.
So get out there or get us out there to plant you some trees that will knock you out of your winter blues.
