In The Garden with Danielle Brown | January 2025 Edition

Chapter 1: Preparing for Growth

The holidays are over, the decorations have been taken down, and you are now settling into the dark days of winter. For some, this is a restful and welcome time. For others, the post-holiday let-down and shortened daylight can be a bit of a bummer.
I like to think of this time as a time for planning- summer vacations, home improvements, and planning what I want to do with the landscape this upcoming growing season. My gardening tip for January is PLAN.

This is a time where I like to think about what direction I want my garden to go. What needs a hard pruning? Perhaps that butterfly bush that has grown unchecked for the past five years. Are there any planting beds or trees I would like to add to my landscape and where? Winter is also a great time to plant woody, deciduous trees and shrubs. What colors would I like to see in my pots or annual beds this year? Which vegetables do I want in my garden? Looking through seed and plant catalogues has a way of lifting my spirits and giving me hope for longer days and warmer weather.
